Pilates 'Mat' classes are the floor work version of the Pilates method. These classes take place in a group setting using your body weight as the primary source of resistance. Focus is placed on precise movements originating from the centre or core of your body. Working from the deepest layers of muscles, which stabilise and support your spine and pelvis, resulting in a strong, flexible spine with ideal posture and alignment. Classes emphasise the foundational principals of Pilates while offering modifications and variations to suit each students individual needs.
Sculpt lean and toned muscles with this energising and dynamic group class to challenge and change your body. No ballet experience or tutus required! Barre Attack efficiently blends Pilates with dance, cardio and strength-training. Specifically targeting arms, legs and core to strenghthen and lengthen the body. Powered by energising, heart pumping music that makes you need to move, this class uses choreographed movement patterns with the support of a ballet barre to take you through a flow of high-powered sequences that will keep you energised and motivated.
What to Expect in a Barre Class
Fun. Energy. Moving. Shaking. Just some of the words that spring to mind.
Barre (as in a ballet barre) style workouts have seen a dramatic increase in popularity over the last few years, and for good reason, they are fun and effective. Barre classes and methods do vary but most combine elements from Pilates, Dance and Fitness. At Reform Pilates we teach the Barre Attack method (www.barreattack.com)
Classes range from 45m to 60m and are held to music, 128bpm. That’s a good beat, and a good tempo. Classes will start with a warmup and then include a mix of barre, cardio and stretch sections that could include using the barre, elastic, ball, weights or mat.
For much of the class you’ll have one or both hands on the barre or be doing exercises just off the barre. Don’t overdo it. Focus on your body position, breathing and timing. Have fun, and just go with it. Barre classes are a full body workout so expect and accept that it could be hard and might work areas that will surprise. If you need to take a break, take it. Remember those around may have been doing Barre Attack classes for years… those great legs and butts don’t happen by accident.
After your first class be careful down stairs! You’ll be tired and your legs will be wondering what just happened. That’s good though… that means it worked!
Finally, if you stick with Barre, you can expect results! Just take a look at anyone who has been doing barre classes a few times a week for several months. We call them Barre Babes!
Yoga is a way of moving into stillness and learning to be centered in action so that you always have the clearest perspective on whats's happening around you. We have a variety of yoga classes available, so read the blurbs below and choose the class that best suits your needs.
Yin is a slower paced style of yoga where postures, or asanas, are held for longer periods of time. Yin poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body - the tendons, the fascia and ligaments in order to increase circulation in the joints, strengthen tissues and improve flexibility. A more meditative approach to yoga, yin aims at cultivating awareness of inner silence.
Key words - Increases Flexibility and Strength in Joints, Calming, Meditative
Vinyasa Flow is a little faster paced. Poses are strung together to make a sequence and movements are led by the breath. Vinyasa yoga increases strength, endurance and flexibility, whilst also reducing levels of stress.
Key words - Energising, Strengthening and Centring
Power yoga is a more vigorous, fitness-based approach to vinyasa-style yoga. Additional movements are incorporated in between flows to build internal heat and strengthen the body and cardiovascular system.
Key words - Empowering, Invigorating, Builds Stamina, Stress Reduction
The Wednesday night class is a mixture of Power/Vinyasa Flow
Are you looking for the perfect unwinding? Perhaps a body opener after a hard work out? Or maybe, you simply need to break away from the stress of the world and realign your center? Sound about right?
If so; look no further!
Whereas most other yoga classes emphasize activity, muscular strength and stamina, restorative classes focus on stillness, lengthening the connective tissues and allowing gravity to do the work for you. Unlike the way we are generally accustomed to strengthening muscles, our ligaments & tendons answer to a slow, steady hold. By holding the postures for longer times and using deep, gentle breathing, the body responds by making the connective tissues longer and stronger. The practice is gentle and quiet — there are very few standing postures and no intensely muscular postures. The practice provides students with the opportunity to listen closely to the messages the body has to offer. Every class is open and accessible to all levels, including first time students.
Yoga brings deep relaxation and because the postures work deeply into muscular tissue, habitual tension is released.
Through movement and breath Yoga brings clarity and mindfulness allowing space to develop in our minds so we can live with contentment and without judgement.
Our classes are based on the continuous practice and teachings of classical Yoga. Using intense yet non-strenuous exercises that are designed to twist, stretch and gain control of the body using a blend of vinyasa (flowing) poses.
Pranayama (breathing) is incorporated into all the movements so a fantastic feeling of inner calm is felt.
All classes are classical in nature with a meditative and flowing manner. Personal instruction is given. All props and mats are included.
Namaste and see you on the mat
Private sessions can be booked when the studio is not being used for group classes.
